Biography

Adriane Fugh-Berman MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and the Department of Family Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Fugh-Berman directs PharmedOut, a Georgetown-based research and education project that addresses industry influence on prescribing. An expert on medicinal herbs and dietary supplements, Dr. Fugh-Berman previously worked with the Reproductive Toxicology Center, a non-profit organization that produces REPROTOX, a database that assesses the effects of more than 5000 drugs, dietary supplements, diseases, and other agents and conditions on pregnancy and fertility. Prior to that she was a medical officer at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health (NIH)and also worked at the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine (now the National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Dr. Fugh-Berman manages medicinal herb gardens on the Georgetown campus. A general practitioner, Dr. Fugh-Berman graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed internship in the Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx.

Dr. Fugh-Berman has written many academic and consumer articles on women’s health; ghostwriting; pharmaceutical company influence on drug use;the medicalization of prevention;herb-drug interactions, and the risks and benefits of complementary and alternative therapies. She is also the author of the 5-Minute Herb and Dietary Supplement Clinical Consult (Lippincott, Williams and Williams, 2003), Alternative Medicine: What Works (Williams and Wilkins, 1997)and the co-author of The National Women’s Health Network’s The Truth about Hormone Replacement Therapy (Prima/​Random House, 2002). She has appeared on 20/​20, the Today Show, Nightline, and every major news network.

An internationally known speaker, addressing both professional and consumer audiences, Dr. Fugh-Berman speaks about pharmaceutical company marketing tactics; industry influence on CME and medical journals; methodological issues in assessing complementary and alternative medicine; risks and benefits of CAM therapies; risks and benefits of herbs and dietary supplements; menopause and other women's health issues; and other subjects.
